A Reckoning with Faith, Empire, & The People Our Theology Erased

For many of us who grew up in Southern churches, Israel wasn’t just a country – it was sacred. It was prophecy. It was untouchable. We were taught that to question Israel’s actions was to question God Himself. But as images from Gaza continue to break hearts and headlines, more and more of us are asking: What if our theology taught us to look away?

In this week’s episode of You Don’t Know, Lindsey and Deanna sit down for one of their most raw and challenging conversations yet. Two years after the escalation of violence in Gaza, they unpack the inherited beliefs that shaped their silence, the end-times narratives that made apathy feel holy, and what it really means to follow the way of Jesus in a world defined by empire.

They talk about growing up in churches where “bless Israel or be cursed” was gospel truth, where prophecy charts mattered more than people, and where loving your neighbor somehow stopped at national borders. They wrestle with the discomfort of realizing that silence is a choice – and that theology can be weaponized to justify harm.

This episode isn’t about taking sides in a geopolitical war; it’s about rediscovering the heart of the Gospel. It’s about remembering that every theology has consequences, and that every neighbor – Jewish, Muslim, or Christian – bears the image of God. It’s an invitation to ask better questions, to unlearn what empire taught us, and to practice a faith that looks like justice.

If you’ve ever wondered how to reconcile your faith with what’s happening in Gaza (or if you’re just ready to stop pretending not to see) this conversation is for you.
